I'm nineteen-years-old, sick of the easy reading teen books, but can't get into adult literature. Suggestions?

I have read a LOT of books in my life, mostly young adult novels and historic novels. I enjoy the storylines, but I am weary of the simple characters, shallow relationships and predictable endings. More than that, I am sick of the easy vocabularies and setup; I feel like I'm doing a seventh grader's homework at the college level. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I abhor most science fiction, horrors and uneventful and single-minded romantic novels. I don't mind romance, but when the book is centered around the step-by-step process it took for the characters to get each other's pants, it gets VERY dull (no offense, Nicholas Sparks). Anything else I'm up for. For a better idea of what I like in literature, it would be good to mention that some of my favorites are "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier", "Pride and Prejudice" and "Animal Farm".
